SASS Services: Intensive Mental Health Services

for Children in Illinois

Presented by: Katie Aklinski & Amanda Heath, RBHN/LifeLinks Crisis Clinicians

Course Description:
What is SASS?  SASS stands for Screening, Assessment and Support Services.  SASS provides intensive mental health services for children who may need hospitalization for mental health care.  Children who have Illinois Medicaid or All Kids may be eligible for SASS services.  How do I refer a child for a SASS screening?  Any educator, school counselor or administrator should refer a child to the CARES line when they are at risk of harming themself or threatening to harm others or when a child is experiencing a mental health crisis.  When a child comes to you in a school setting and is reporting suicidal or homicidal thoughts or other risk factors such as self-mutilation, it is important to be educated about the procedure for making a SASS referral.  This informative session will also provide information on differing levels of care and services available to children in Illinois.
