KEYNOTE: Kevin Honeycutt “Hooking Learners with Digital Tools” Break Out Descriptions: A Bucket Full of Ideas: Nancy Conlon-Mattoon This workshop will show technology extensions for books found in the library across the curriculum. Many of the ideas are for Caldecott and Monarch books as well as the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today". Lessons will use Word, Power Point, Excel and Photo Story. Make Your Lessons Pop with Brain Pop: Suzie Bosler & Lou Conwell, Charleston Learn to use & integrate Brain Pop into your classroom learning. You'll be surprised at how much students tune into learning with this teaching tool. Join Suzie, Lou, Tim and Moby to expand your knowledge in a fun, practical way! Molecular Modeling, Using Web MO: Brett Block, Paris 95 Using molecular modeling to improve student visualization of various chemistry topics - this presentation will demonstrate how to use a free, online resource called WebMO to enhance student learning of various chemistry concepts that can be used in conjunction with labs or by themselves. Brett Block (IC-3 fellow at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) Google Earth in the Classroom: Terry Sullivan, Shiloh Google Earth can be used with any grade and content area. Beyond the basic “maps” there are “layers’ for every teacher. From Weather to Astronomy, from to History to Social Action, Google Earth has classroom applications. By checking a few boxes, you can show students historical sites, cities as they once were, agriculture, geography, meteorology, constellations and more! Goggle Earth has LitTrips for highlighting locations in common student literature readings. There is always more!! If you want to try GPS activities be sure to include Google Earth. Want to learn to GeoTag your digital pictures making the ultimate scrapbook? Google Earth is your teaching assistant. You will leave this session with examples and resources for integrating Google Earth into your classroom. Make research more than just writing a paper: Susan Imeroni & Jim Pattenaude, Crestwood There is far more than having a student research a topic and write a paper. Don’t limit your students to text and a few pictures. Turn your student’s creativity loose by letting them create powerful digital presentations. Come and see what happens when students utilize videos, audio, graphics, text and more as they create digital presentations. Moodle in the Classroom: Mandy Hanner, Oakland Collaboration, organizing, posting and blogs are just a few of the possibilities you have when you create your own Moodle Site. I will share with you how using Moodle in my classroom has changed the way I teach and the way my students learn. GPS, GIS & Elementary – Where are we Now?: Lesliea Palmer & Amy Kincaid, Shiloh Elementary Discover the ways Global Positioning and Information Systems are being used in the elementary classrooms. GPS really is an essential tool for student learning, Shiloh Elementary is using GPS activities in every core subject. Combined with satellite imagery, the collecting and mapping of GPS data has transformed student learning with high interest, real life experiences. Make It Simple Podcasting: Mary Ann Pattenaude, Charleston Have you been hearing about podcasting and wondering what it is and how you might use it in your classroom? In this workshop, you will find, listen and subscribe to a variety of student and professionally produced podcasts, and learn to create a podcast yourself. Linking Your lessons with Smart Notebook: Shelly East, Crestwood Discover the power of linking videos, documents, websites and more to your lessons when using Smart Notebook. You will learn to create interactive lessons that are truly guided by students instead of what happens to be on the next slide. Managing your classroom with technology: Susan Imeroni, Crestwood Technology can be a powerful teaching tool but how do you find the time to fit it in? Technology can keep students engaged from the second they walk in the classroom as well as give the teacher feedback throughout the class to help you keep track of the level of understanding the students have at any given moment. I will demonstrate how I use technology to help manage my students, curriculum and learning. Trends, Tactics and Tools for 21st Century Learning: Kevin Honeycutt This session is a fun look at the exciting things that happen when educators step outside their boxes and try new tools. It reinforces the importance of relationships while encouraging teachers to become learners again through positive examples of student success. I’ll share the notion of self-directed staff development and delve into what it takes to build your own “personal learning network”. Before They Click...: Kevin Honeycutt In this presentation I delve into the difference between firewalls and teaching kids positive behaviors with digital tools and in virtual places. I talk about cyber-bullying and offer suggestions for guiding kids away from behaviors that are damaging to victims as well as bullies. I share resources and sites that are helpful for mentors of “digital” kids. This is a balanced conversation that illuminates many positive digital tools that educators can use to bring out the best in kids. Connecting to the Edu-verse / Self-directed staff development: Kevin Honeycutt (one hour presentation, whole or half day or hands on) In this session we explore several online learning communities that teachers can use to begin what I call self-directed staff development. We’ll join a few of these communities and begin building networks that will serve participants, long after our day is over. Managing RTI Data with Technology: Danette Young & Lisa Doughan, Crestwood Is your RTI data getting out of control? Come and see how technology can help you manage the data so the you can effectively track student progress. Solar System Science: NASA An overview of all the planets (and one former planet) in the solar system. Teachers will learn hands-on ways to incorporate measurement skills using planet distances, sizes, gravity, and other characteristics such as rotation, temperature, and atmospheric conditions. Line Up With Math™: NASA Make math fun! Math based decisions are made within the real-world setting of an air traffic control unit. Teachers learn how to use an interactive online Simulator featuring air traffic control problems to help students learn essential mathematical skills such as algebra, problem solving, connections, and representation. Workshop is designed for teachers of students in grades 5-9. Rocketry/Forces in Motion: NASA Using the newly revisited NASA Rockets Educator's Guide, teachers will learn how to shop for, build, and launch their own rockets. Participants can use information gained during this workshop to train a classroom of rocket scientists! The Rockets Educator's Guide has activities for every grade level K-12 which focus on National Science Standards. Using Technology in your Math Class: Michelle Clark, Crestwood Using digital and tools is a great way to teach Math. I will demonstrate the tools and some of the ways technology has impacted my classroom.
Bringing Art to Life in Your Elementary Classroom: Cariann Phegley, Paris 95 Do you love the idea of hands‐on art in your classroom, but scared of what it takes? In this session we will be experimenting with various art supplies (and a few non‐traditional) and brainstorming about their uses in the elementary classroom. We will try some hands‐on activities and view some examples of bringing math, science, and reading to life through art! Be prepared to get a little messy and have some fun! Ways to Use the Capture Tool: Nancy Conlon, Mattoon Turn your SMARTBoard into a green screen and put students in a picture with Abraham Lincoln or roaming the earth with dinosaurs. Hooking Learners with Digital Tools: Kevin Honeycutt In this session I share free tools as well as stories about schools and classrooms that have used them to engage learners and learning. I inspire educators to use exciting tools to reach even the reluctant learner.
